What is Panelling?
Wall panelling is a decorative design on walls, doors, ceilings and furniture which consists of a series of wide, thin sheets of wood. These sheets of wood are then framed by narrower and thicker strips of wood called styles, muntins and rails.
Panelling in the Gothic Period
During the Gothic period (Tudor and Elizabethan), panelling was used to emphasise the richness and warmth of interior decoration of the time. The walls of early Tudor times were largely carved in fielded panels where the central area was raised above the framing. Examples of this style of panelling can be found today in Hampton Court Palace, London.
During the time of the English Renaissance, panelling became simple, whilst in the Italian Renaissance, architects only used panelling on ceilings. The influence of panelling then spread to parts of the newly founded Southern Colonies of the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries.
During this period, the materials that were used for panelling were typically oak or pine.
Panelling in the Victorian period
During the Victorian period, wall panelling was used to go up so far on the wall before being capped off with a dado rail to protect the wall from chairs. The design of the Victorian wall panels was used to complement the era’s rich designs and was mainly geometric and included stripes. The wall panels would also compliment the high skirting boards and cornices.
During this period, more materials were used for panelling, such as solid wood (e.g walnut, birch or redwood), plywood (a thin wood veneer on a plywood base), and hardwood and translucent materials such as lucite.
The Return of Wall Panels
Recently wall panels have begun to make a comeback in people’s homes. Whereas before, wall panels used to be popular in the homes of the wealthy, due to technological advancements and the development of MDF, wall panels are more cost-effective for everyone.
